I am really bad at exercising at home. First of all, I’m bad at self motivating. And even when I do gather enough motivation to start exercising, I am too easily distracted! I’m constantly trying to find the perfect music. Or suddenly I have the urge to do laundry, or clean in general! I’ll try to find any excuse to stop exercising. When it comes to exercising, I prefer doing it in a group… and preferably outside my hose.
Over the past few years I’ve tried a few different group exercise classes and not all of them worked for me. Here is what I liked and disliked about each of them.
First, CrossFit. I did a 3 month trial at a local CrossFit and I loved the lifting weights aspect of it. But all the running that was involved just wasn’t my jam. I’m not motivated by being told I’m not trying hard enough, and that seemed to be a key motivating technique used by some of the coaches. Also, I would be experience knee or back pain during an exercise and modifications were not offered. Instead I would be encouraged to “dig deeper” and “give it my all”. CrossFit was not for me.
Then I tried Bikram Yoga, which was great! At first the heat was way too much for me, but after the first week, the heat was not an issue. I really enjoyed the stretches, and the poses and how relaxed I felt after each class. What I didn’t like was the cost, and how pushy the people at that studio were about joining.
My third try at group exercise was spin. I signed up at a local studio with a couple of my co-workers as a part of an office weight loss challenge. After the first workout I was hooked. It was extremely challenging, but I felt oddly energized afterwards. I finally understood the whole “exercise gives you endorphins” thing.
What I like most about spin is that the ride is never the same, the instructors are always making new playlists, and every class has a different focus. I also love spin because it is gentle on my knees and back and doesn’t leave me in pain, which was a problem with CrossFit.
Don’t be afraid to try a variety of different things before you find the type of exercise that’s right for you. Also I encourage you to find a workout buddy, it’s always easier to try something new when you aren’t alone. It’s great to finally find an exercise I enjoy, and don’t want to find an excuse to avoid. I hope the same for you!
